Snoring_sound_production.tifAre you a snorer? Or does your other half keep you awake at night with the sound of their snoring? If the answer is yes to either of these questions, read on to see our easy tips for preventing snoring, so that you and your partner can both get a good nights sleep at last.

Lose Excess Weight

For some people losing weight can help to stop snoring as it reduces the fatty tissue at the back of the throat which causes snoring. If you know that you need to lose some weight, speak to your GP for some tips and support in doing this. It may not be easy but it will be worth it.

Take Some Exercise

Taking regular exercise can help to reduce snoring levels too. It is certainly worth a try and will be good for you whether it helps or not.

Give up Smoking

Smokers are in with a much higher chance of becoming snorers than non-smokers as smoking irritates the membranes of the throat and reduces the amount of air that can pass easily through it. Cut your chances by giving up the habit.

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat which cause snoring. If you know that you snore anyway don’t make it worse by consuming alcohol before bedtime.

Have a Sleep Routine

This can help both you and your partner get to sleep well and stay asleep. Develop a proper wind-down routine, where you perhaps bath, clean your teeth, do a short relaxation exercise and then turn off all electrical devices and the lights before falling asleep. This will encourage a deeper level of sleep and may reduce snoring.

Don’t Sleep on Your Back

Sleeping on your back can greatly increase your chances of snoring because of how the muscles in your throat hang. Try sleeping on your side instead.

Get help from your dentist

If you have tried the above and you are still suffering from snoring, it is time to book an appointment to see your dentist. Your dentist may be able to help by creating a special anti-snoring mouth guard that you can wear at night time.
