New Year New You!

New Year New You! …. It’s the start of a new year! 2018 here we come! We’ve recovered from Christmas (just) and navigated the new year celebrations, from the 9pm family social media posts: wishing us health and happiness early because ‘there is no way we will be a awake at midnight’, to the slurs and cheers of the Big Ben countdown from those lucky enough not to be responsible for tiny humans. A bit of “Auld Lang Syne (or the one line we actually know) and the Conga and we have woken up, bleary eyed but ready to start a brand new year, full of promise. Yes 2018 had its ups and downs (it’s obligatory to say this) but will 2018 be our year?

Suddenly the realisation that those resolutions don’t just happen dawns upon us, the promise to drink less, eat less, exercise more, complete that book list etc seemed so much easier when we were munching on our Christmas pudding with a turkey leg in one hand and glass of Prosecco in the other…. In fact the following social media image has been shared with a snigger and a nod by many of us this month. (See attached)

Perhaps it’s not worth setting the goals? Bridget Jones failed to keep many of her resolutions and she ended up with Mark Darcy anyway… But for many of us, setting a resolution is less about following a trend and instead, using January the first as an opportunity to start a fresh.

According to mental health UK a staggering 80% of people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions. In fact, The Independent reported in 2014 that only 3% of people rigorously stick to their goals and, the vast majority of us give up within just 24 days. So how can we stay on top of our decisions and remain motivated? We have had a look at some of the most common self-promises for the new year and have compiled a few hints and tips for this month’s news articles to ensure you to start as you mean to go on. So dig out that list, take a deep breath and start 2018 as you mean to go on. How awesome to reach Christmas 2016 knowing we have set out and achieved our goals?
