How will I know if I need crowns or bridges?

If a patient comes to us with missing, damaged or cracked teeth crowns and bridges can be an excellent solution to restoring their teeth to a much improved state. A dentist will be able to tell you very quickly if this is the appropriate treatment for your situation.

What exactly is a crown?

A crowns is used to completely cap an existing tooth, or an existing dental implant. They can be used when a cavity has already developed in a tooth and has been allowed to advance. Crowns can be made from many different materials, though all of these will be strong and hardwearing, so that they can take on the job that your ‘natural’ tooth would have done.

What exactly is a bridge?

A dental bridge is used to fill any gaps that you may have in your natural teeth. Usually a bridge uses the support of surrounding teeth to be held securely in place, though occasionally a bridge will require the support of a dental implant. Like crowns, bridges can be made from a variety of materials and unlike dentures they are fixed in place permanently.

How long do they take to fit?

The time that it takes to fit a crowns or bridges will vary between patients, so please speak to a dentist to find out more.

Will the process be painful or uncomfortable?

A good dentist will do everything they can to reduce the amount of discomfort you experience during dental treatment.  A local anaesthetic is usually given before this treatment to keep any pain to a minimum.
