What is a hygienist?

Dental hygienists are highly skilled members of the dental team, having qualified from a university dental school. They not only treat gum disease but also play a key role in prevention by helping ensure that you can practice the most effective home-care routines.

Meet our team of Hygienists!

Why are dental hygienists important?

Maintaining a high standard of oral hygiene as advised by a dental hygienist can reduce your risk of developing gum disease and tooth decay. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence of a link between periodontal (gum) disease and systemic illness such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes – another excellent important reason to have a healthy mouth.

Why should patients see their hygienist?

Seeing your dental hygienist regularly ensures your teeth and gums are thoroughly cleaned and that the bacterial biofilm, which plays an important role in gum disease, is removed. They will also remove unsightly staining and the hard deposit (tartar), which cannot be brushed off. An appointment with your hygienist can therefore help to keep your gums healthy, teeth whiter and reduce the likelihood of decay and tooth infections, which in turn will give you a confident smile.

How often should patients visit a hygienist?

Your dentist and hygienist will recommend a time interval between visits according to your needs. Generally, this may be six moths as part of a preventative regime or three monthly for those who are susceptible to gum disease.
